in 2017, Sloane Stephens was chill about winning the U.S. Open, until she got her $3.7 million check.  As of July 2019, Sloane is 26 and going strong with a WTA ranking of 9.
After an all-American women’s 2017 U.S. Open semifinal, Sloane Stephens became the champion in a match that even Serena Williams said she was excited to watch. She was 24-years-old when she beat Madison Keys in two sets to win her first major final.
However, Stephens’ immediate reaction to winning was very mild considering everything she went through to get here. There was no screaming and no fist pumping. She simply covered her mouth as if at a loss for words before flashing a huge smile. Although, she did dominate the match, so it wasn’t too shocking of a victory.
Then, Stephens went to go give her friend and opponent a hug.
It was in the stands where Stephens showed the most emotion. She teared up while hugging her mom, and she teared up again when she recognized her mom during the trophy presentation.
But there were smiles and laughs too, especially when Stephens was handed her $3.7 million check. She looked completely shocked when they announced the amount, and she could be heard saying, “Wow! That’s a lot of money!”
Stephens has been tipped by many to be the next American star after Serena Williams. The Florida native has had an impressive resume of winning the 2017 US Open and reaching the final of the 2018 French Open.
On-court Achievements
As mentioned before, Stephens has one Grand Slam under her belt. Aside from that and her runner-up in the French Open, she was a semifinalist in Australia 2013 and a quarterfinalist in Wimbledon 2013.
She also has six WTA titles and 1 ITF title to her credit. These are:
2018 – Miami; 2017 – US Open; 2016 – Auckland, Acapulco, Charleston; 2015 – Washington DC.
Her maiden Grand Slam win also earned her a career-best $3.7million.
She is currently ranked No 6 in the world and pocketed $14,548,931.
Her singles record in Grand slams is 65 wins, 28 losses.
Stephens has also been endorsed by companies like Head, Under Armour and Precision Nutrition.
Foundations and Charity Work
She founded the Sloane Stephens Foundation in 2013 with the objective of enhancing the quality of life for youth. She aims to do this through exposure to tennis as a basis for life-long learning, and healthy lifestyle choices.
Being African American people have always compared Sloane Stephens to Serena Williams, but as yet, she has not been as consistent in her success.  But she is a strong player and her winnings show she cannot be underestimated.
